The College Hoops Conference Tournament Roundup: Day 4

We’re at the best time of the year. The part where everyone gets involved and cares about college hoops. So with that in mind I understand that there are a million different games going on and you can’t keep up with them all. So we’ll update you every morning with what happened the night before through the NCAA Tournament. Forget all other sites, we got you here.

ACC Tournament (Quarterfinals)
Thoughts:
Can we talk about how awesome it is we finally get UNC/Duke with Zion at full strength? Felt a bit robbed of that this year. We all know the story. Let’s be honest here though. The story last night was all about Zion. Duke looks the part of a No. 1 seed with him. A win over UNC locks that up. I still love this Virginia team, but keep an eye on Florida State. They are one of the best teams in the country that no one seems to talk about. They blew a lead against Virginia Tech but still were able to get the win. Florida State can defend, can rebound. The question is whether or not they can hit shots.

No. 1 Virginia 76, No. 8 NC State 56

No. 4 Florida State 65, No. 5 Virginia Tech 63 (OT)

No. 2 UNC 83, No. 7 Louisville 70

No. 3 Duke 84, No. 6 Syracuse 72

Big 12 Tournament (Quarterfinals)
Thoughts: Bobby fucking Huggins! Look at WVU over here. Huggins goes on Twitter and posts a video of him popping out of a coffin back from 2000 and they go and beat the best team in the conference. Don’t tell me he doesn’t have some juju. Then there’s Kansas being Kansas. How dumb was everyone to rule them out? They get a WVU team in the semifinals in order to make the title game. I’ll say this. Keep an eye out for Iowa State. I may not be able to quit this team but it’s because they have games like yesterday. It all clicks on offense. They are average defensively. They aren’t fighting with each other. This team is put together perfectly, the question will always just be can they mesh together from a personality standpoint.

No.5 Iowa State 83, No. 4 Baylor 66

No. 1 Kansas State 70, No. 8 TCU 61

No. 10 West Virginia 79, No. 2 Texas Tech 74

Big East Tournament (Quarterfinals)
Thoughts:
What a bunch of dummies we are. Here we are expecting some sort of craziness in the Big East. I mean there really wasn’t much of a difference from top to bottom in this league. Every seed held serve. Boring yet unexpected. If you’re a St. John’s fan be prepared to sweat for a few days. I don’t know how St. John’s can be considered a lock for the NCAA Tournament or even comfortably in. They very well may end up in Dayton in the First Four or out. Creighton is likely out as well. I know Creighton fans thought there was a foul on that last call. It looked fairly clean to me. But, here’s the other thing. It was a dogshit possession. Creighton just dribbled around. They had no motion. No movement. There’s absolutely no way you settle for a contested three off the bounce there. That’s on Creighton – not the refs. Oh and Myles Powell. Just so goddamn good.

No. 1 Villanova 73, No. 8 Providence 62

No. 4 Xavier 63, No. 5 Creighton 61

No. 2 Marquette 86, No. 7 St. John’s 54

No. 3 Seton Hall 73, No. 6 Georgetown 57

Big 10 Tournament (2nd Round)

Thoughts: Uh, Indiana? No desire to show up for a fairly important game? I mean literally one win over a free-falling Ohio State team and you’re in the NCAA Tournament. Don’t be confused by the score. It was a 20 point game. Ohio State controlled the entire time. There was nothing from Indiana. It was upsetting to say the least if you’re an IU fan. But, at least you got upstaged by Maryland who just refuses to win a game in the Big 10 Tournament. Tim Miles is doing a hell of a job to keep his job as much as he can, but Maryland with that roster and not beating a Nebraska team that’s playing like 6 or 7 guys is embarrassing. Minnesota stays alive for the NCAA Tournament too in a weird game. Penn State should have won that game. They just made so many damn dumb decisions down the stretch and Minnesota hung around just enough to force OT and then win.

No. 13 Nebraska 69, No. 5 Maryland 61

No. 7 Minnesota 77, No. 10 Penn State 72 (OT)

No. 6 Iowa 83, No. 11 Illinois 62

SEC Tournament (2nd Round)
Thoughts: Not really a whole lot in the SEC today. Florida got a win to stay on the bubble/right side of it. Alabama did the same. That’s really the biggest thing. The two teams that had to win today got it. Tomorrow we get better matchups and everyone in play.

Pac-12 Tournament (Quarterfinals)
Thoughts:
Arizona State and Washington need to meet in the Finals. That’s the one hope for the conference to send two bids for sure. They are one step closer. Washington blew the cover (make your free throws) but keep an eye on that for tomorrow. Colorado has actually been a decent team over the last month or so. They have NBA talent with someone like Tyler Bey and McKinley Wright. Don’t be overly surprised if Colorado wins that game today.

No. 2 Arizona State 83, No. 7 UCLA 72

No. 6 Oregon 66, No. 3 Utah 54

AAC Tournament (1st Round)
Thoughts: I only want to write about this so far because of Memphis. There’s a legit chance for an upset for two reasons. Memphis is playing at home. I’m still not sure how that happens but Memphis is hosting this tournament. That crowd will come out. Second, is Jeremiah Martin is good enough to go win you a game. They get a chance to play UCF, a team they already beat at home and then Houston. Just watch Memphis.

Mountain West Tournament (Quarterfinals)
Thoughts:
We’re getting real close to a 2-bid MWC. Utah State was able to get a win today and that’s the hope. They can be an at-large and Nevada obviously is Nevada. I do want to talk about Nevada for a second though. One of the things we heard this year was Nevada just never seemed to look the part of preseason expectations. That’s fair. I think part of that is the fact that they are bored. You’re talking about 7-8 seniors that know they are better than 99% of teams they play. I expect them to sort of flip a switch here in March.
